Using navigation in Assist

How drivers navigate to the job site and on to the destination, and how dispatch can follow live routes on the map.

Written by Leif T. Rudlang

Navigation in Assist helps the driver find the fastest route to the job site and on to any transport destination. That means efficient driving, a better overview and support from the vehicle controller or dispatch.

Navigation in beta – test it and give us your feedback

The navigation feature is now available as a beta version (preview), and we invite you as a user to test it out in the field. The aim is to gather experience and input that can make the feature even more useful in your working day.

Do you have ideas, or have you spotted something that could be improved? Do share it with us!
Send suggestions and feedback to: support@assist-it.no

Some of the areas for improvement we are already considering:

  • The option to share the ETA (estimated time of arrival) directly with the customer.

  • Better alerts when you are close to arrival.

  • Smoother handling of navigation for multiple stops or waypoints.

  • Closer integration with maps and other real-time data.

We greatly appreciate all feedback – both small observations and larger suggestions. This is a feature we are developing together with the people who use it.

Using navigation in services

1. Start a service

  • Open a service that has been assigned to you from "My page".

  • Accept the service and set the status to En route.

2. Start navigation

  • Tap Start navigation to follow the route to the job site.

  • If the service has no pre-filled address, you can select an address manually from the map.

3. Follow the route

  • The navigation guides you to the job site.

  • As you approach the end of the route, the system will ask whether you want to mark the service as Arrived.

  • If you want to end the navigation yourself, you can tap End to stop the navigation manually. You are then returned to the screen you were on before.

4. For transport

If the service is not Ready on site and you are going to carry out transport.

  • Go to the Assistancetab.

  • Add the destination for the transport.

  • Select Loaded and then tap Start navigation.

  • Follow the route to the destination.

  • Tap Arrived at destination and complete the service as usual.

How to see driver routes on the map

When a driver has navigation active, their route is shown directly on the map. This gives you as vehicle controller or dispatch a clear picture of where the vehicles are and where they are heading. It is useful both for keeping track of services in progress and for assigning new services close to routes that are finishing.

💡 When the feature is switched on, routes appear on the map as lines from the start point to the destination – as shown in the image above.

How to switch on route display in the map

  1. Open the map view in the system.

  2. Go to the menu "Layers" (top left in the map).

  3. Switch on "Service vehicles".

  4. Tick "Show navigation route" to show active routes in the map.

FAQ

Location permissions
For the navigation to work, you must give Assist access to your location.
Follow this guide to enable sharing: How to give Assist access to my location

What happens if I close Assist while navigation is active?
The navigation pauses in the background. That means dispatch no longer receives your position and therefore cannot see where you are or where you are heading.

Do I always have to use the navigation inside a service?
No. You can also use the navigation freely from "My pages" if you only need directions to an address.

What happens if I drive a different route from the one suggested?
The system adjusts the route automatically based on your actual direction of travel and position.

Do I have to use the navigation in order to carry out a service?
No, it is not required. But it is recommended, as it gives faster driving and better support from the vehicle controller or dispatch.

Can I start the navigation without an address being set?
Yes. If the service has no pre-filled address, you can tap "Start navigation" and choose an address in the map yourself or search manually.

How does the system know that I have arrived?
If you follow the route all the way to the end point, the system will ask whether you want to mark the service as "Arrived".
This requires you to drive right to the end of the route. If that is not possible, you can end the navigation manually and then mark the service as arrived.
